Agosto va llegando a su fin. Los días siguen siendo largos y calurosos, pero las noches invitan a un buen plan de sofá, ventilador y película. Y en Universo Agatha no se nos ocurre nada mejor que proponerte un pasatiempo refrescante: ver a Agatha Christie convertida en personaje de cine y televisión. Sí, no hablamos de Poirot, Miss Marple o Tommy y Tuppence, sino de la propia autora, que en varias ocasiones ha sido llevada a la pantalla como protagonista de su propia historia… o de una versión un tanto novelada de la misma.
La fascinación por Agatha como personaje
Convertir a escritores en personajes de ficción siempre ha tenido un magnetismo especial, pero en el caso de Agatha Christie la tentación era aún mayor. La mujer que inventaba los crímenes más ingeniosos, que viajaba por medio mundo y que desapareció misteriosamente en 1926 durante once días, tenía todos los ingredientes para inspirar guiones. Así, a lo largo de las décadas, hemos visto a Christie en la pantalla convertida en algo más que escritora: un personaje de carne y hueso reinventado por el cine y la televisión.
El misterio de 1926: Agatha (1979)

La película más conocida en este terreno es sin duda Agatha (1979). Con Vanessa Redgrave en el papel de la escritora y Dustin Hoffman como el periodista que le sigue la pista, la cinta se centra en los días de su famosa desaparición. El guion se atreve a imaginar lo que nunca sabremos con certeza: qué ocurrió durante esas jornadas en que el mundo entero buscaba a la autora más popular de Inglaterra. El resultado es un drama elegante, de atmósfera setentera, que mezcla romanticismo y misterio. Aunque no convenció del todo a la familia Christie —hubo demandas legales— se ha convertido en un título de culto para los seguidores de la escritora.
Una detective en su propio universo: Agatha y la verdad del crimen (2018)
El interés por Christie como personaje no se agotó en los setenta. En 2018, la televisión británica estrenó Agatha y la verdad del crimen, un film que plantea una premisa irresistible: ¿y si, durante su desaparición de 1926, Agatha hubiera resuelto un crimen real? En esta versión, interpretada por Ruth Bradley, la autora se convierte en detective improvisada en un caso de asesinato —inspirado en el caso de Florence Nightingale Shore—. Con guiños constantes a su obra, la película es un juego de espejos que mezcla realidad y fantasía.

Aventuras en Oriente: Agatha y la maldición de Ishtar (2019)
Un año después llegó Agatha y la maldición de Ishtar (2019), con Lyndsey Marshal en la piel de una joven Christie que viaja a Mesopotamia en plena excavación arqueológica. La trama aprovecha dos de sus grandes pasiones —los viajes y la arqueología— para envolverla en una historia de misterio y romance. Aunque la crítica no fue entusiasta y el guion resultó irregular, es curiosa por situar a Agatha en escenarios que luego inspirarían varias de sus novelas más exóticas.

Un cierre poco inspirado: Agatha y los asesinatos de medianoche (2020)
En 2020 se estrenó Agatha y los asesinatos de medianoche, con Helen Baxendale como Agatha, que presenta a la autora en plena Segunda Guerra Mundial vendiendo un manuscrito inédito de Poirot mientras se ve envuelta en nuevos crímenes. Aunque la premisa resultaba prometedora, la ejecución no convenció. La crítica la consideró irregular y, en general, muy inferior a las dos entregas anteriores. Aun así, completa la trilogía televisiva que juega a convertir a Agatha en protagonista de sus propios misterios.

El magnetismo de un mito
¿Por qué tantas versiones? Quizá porque Agatha Christie es mucho más que una escritora de éxito: es un icono cultural. Su vida tuvo suficientes zonas oscuras, viajes extraordinarios y silencios elocuentes como para que cineastas y guionistas la vean como un personaje en sí mismo. Incluso series tan populares como Doctor Who no han podido resistirse a incluirla como personaje, mezclando ciencia ficción y misterio en el episodio El unicornio y la avispa ambientado en 1926, cuando la escritora desaparece.

Un plan para estas noches de verano
Estamos en los últimos días de agosto. El verano aún tiene cuerda, pero empieza a oler a despedida. ¿Y si lo cerramos con un maratón de “Agathas en pantalla”? Desde el dramatismo de Vanessa Redgrave hasta la intriga televisiva británica más reciente, hay propuestas para todos los gustos. Son películas y telefilms que no pretenden contarnos la verdad absoluta, sino jugar con la leyenda y mantener vivo el enigma de una autora que siempre se resistió a dar explicaciones sobre sí misma.
Quizá no sepamos nunca qué pasó en aquel diciembre de 1926, ni si habría disfrutado viéndose como heroína de aventuras. Pero lo que está claro es que la «Reina del Crimen” sigue inspirando historias… incluso cuando la protagonista es ella misma.

August is drawing to a close. The days are still long and hot, but the evenings call for a good plan: sofa, fan and film. And here at Universo Agatha we can’t think of a better way to cool down than watching Agatha Christie herself turned into a character for cinema and television. Yes, we’re not talking about Poirot, Miss Marple or Tommy and Tuppence, but the author herself, who on several occasions has appeared on screen as the heroine of her own story – or at least of a somewhat fictionalised version of it.
The fascination with Agatha as a character
Turning writers into fictional characters has always had a special magnetism, but in Agatha Christie’s case the temptation was even greater. The woman who devised the most ingenious crimes, who travelled around the world, and who mysteriously disappeared in 1926 for eleven days, had all the ingredients to inspire screenwriters. Over the decades, Christie has been reinvented on screen as something more than an author: a flesh-and-blood character recast by film and television.
The mystery of 1926: Agatha (1979)
The best-known film in this category is undoubtedly Agatha (1979). Vanessa Redgrave plays the writer and Dustin Hoffman the journalist who follows her trail. The film focuses on the days of her famous disappearance. The script dares to imagine what we will never know for certain: what really happened during those days when the whole world was searching for England’s most popular author. The result is an elegant, very 1970s drama mixing romance and mystery. Although it didn’t convince the Christie family – there were even legal disputes – it has since become a cult film for fans of the writer.
A detective in her own right: Agatha and the Truth of Murder (2018)
Interest in Christie as a character didn’t end in the seventies. In 2018, British television released Agatha and the Truth of Murder, a TV film with an irresistible premise: what if, during her disappearance in 1926, Agatha had solved a real crime? In this version, played by Ruth Bradley, the author becomes an amateur detective in a murder case inspired by the killing of Florence Nightingale Shore. With constant nods to her work, the film is a hall-of-mirrors game mixing reality and fantasy.
Adventures in the East: Agatha and the Curse of Ishtar (2019)
A year later came Agatha and the Curse of Ishtar (2019), with Lyndsey Marshal portraying a young Christie travelling to Mesopotamia during an archaeological excavation. The plot draws on two of her great passions – travel and archaeology – to wrap her in a story of mystery and romance. Although critics were not enthusiastic and the script felt uneven, it remains a curiosity for placing Agatha in settings that later inspired some of her most exotic novels.
An uninspired ending: Agatha and the Midnight Murders (2020)
In 2020 Agatha and the Midnight Murders was released, with Helen Baxendale as Agatha. This time, the author is depicted during the Second World War, selling an unpublished Poirot manuscript while becoming entangled in fresh crimes. Although the premise sounded promising, the execution fell short. Critics considered it uneven and generally inferior to the two previous instalments. Still, it rounds off the trilogy of TV films that turn Agatha into the heroine of her own mysteries.
The magnetism of a myth
Why so many versions? Perhaps because Agatha Christie is much more than a successful writer: she is a cultural icon. Her life held enough shadows, extraordinary journeys and eloquent silences for filmmakers to see her as a character in her own right. Even hugely popular series such as Doctor Who could not resist including her, blending science fiction and mystery in the 2008 episode The Unicorn and the Wasp, set in 1926 at the time of her disappearance.
A plan for these late summer nights
We are in the final days of August. Summer still has some life in it, but it already smells of farewell. So why not round it off with a marathon of “Agathas on screen”? From the drama of Vanessa Redgrave to the most recent British TV mysteries, there is something for every taste. These films and TV movies do not claim to tell the absolute truth, but rather to play with the legend and keep alive the enigma of an author who always resisted giving explanations about herself.
We may never know what really happened in that December of 1926, nor whether she would have enjoyed seeing herself as the heroine of adventures. But what is certain is that the “Queen of Crime” continues to inspire stories… even when she herself is the protagonist.
