Cuando pensamos en Agatha Christie, lo primero que nos viene a la mente son crímenes imposibles, giros inesperados y detectives inolvidables como Hercule Poirot o Miss Marple. Sin embargo, detrás de la “Reina del Crimen” se escondía una mujer con aficiones muy terrenales y, a veces, sorprendentemente modernas. Hoy, queremos asomarnos a su faceta más cotidiana para descubrir cuáles eran los hobbies que llenaban de alegría su vida.
Jardines para el alma
Entre todos sus pasatiempos, la jardinería ocupaba un lugar privilegiado. Christie sentía un profundo placer en ensuciarse las manos con la tierra y ver crecer sus plantas. En Greenway, su casa de vacaciones en Devon, pasaba horas observando cómo cambiaba la luz sobre los rododendros, diseñando rincones verdes y cuidando de su invernadero. No era una jardinera profesional, pero encontraba en la naturaleza una fuente de calma y creatividad. Solía experimentar con plantas exóticas traídas de sus viajes, haciendo de su jardín un reflejo de sus aventuras. Para ella, no había nada comparable al sosiego de contemplar cómo florecía un jardín bien cuidado.

Agatha tenía otra gran pasión: sus casas. Desde la infancia en Ashfield, su hogar en Torquay, hasta su retiro final en Winterbrook, disfrutaba redecorando, moviendo muebles de un lado a otro y creando ambientes acogedores. La arqueología como aventura
Otro gran hobby de Christie fue la arqueología. Cuando se casó con Max Mallowan, eminente arqueólogo, no se limitó a acompañarlo en sus expediciones a Irak y Siria. Al contrario, se convirtió en parte activa de los equipos de excavación. Limpió piezas de cerámica, tomó fotografías, documentó hallazgos e incluso utilizó crema facial para restaurar delicados objetos. En Ven y dime cómo vives, su delicioso libro de memorias arqueológicas, nos cuenta con humor y frescura la vida en los yacimientos: desde las incomodidades de las tiendas hasta la emoción de desenterrar fragmentos del pasado. Si algo caracterizó a Agatha Christie fue su espíritu viajero. Desde muy joven recorrió el mundo: primero con su madre, después en el célebre Grand Tour de 1922 con su primer marido y más tarde en innumerables travesías a Oriente Medio junto a Max. Viajaba en trenes míticos como el Orient Express, cruzaba desiertos y navegaba por el Nilo. Los viajes eran, para ella, mucho más que desplazamientos, eran experiencias vitales que ampliaban horizontes y le proporcionaban recuerdos que atesoraba con la misma pasión con la que guardaba los objetos que traía de vuelta a casa.

Una dama sobre las olas
Entre sus hobbies más sorprendentes se encuentra el surf. Durante su viaje a Hawái en 1922, Agatha y Archie Christie se subieron por primera vez a una tabla y aprendieron a cabalgar las olas en Waikiki. En una época en la que este deporte era casi desconocido en Europa, ella se convirtió en una de las primeras mujeres británicas en practicarlo. Aunque no continuó con la afición al volver a Inglaterra, siempre recordaba aquellas sesiones soleadas en la playa como una de sus aventuras más originales.
El piano y la música
De niña, Agatha recibió clases de piano y llegó a tocar con notable soltura. Aunque nunca aspiró a ser concertista profesional, la música le acompañó durante toda su vida. Tocaba por placer, para amigos o para ella misma, disfrutando de esos momentos íntimos frente al teclado. When we think of Agatha Christie, the first things that come to mind are impossible crimes, unexpected twists, and unforgettable detectives such as Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple. Yet behind the “Queen of Crime” was a woman with very down-to-earth – and sometimes surprisingly modern – hobbies. Today, let’s take a look at her everyday side and discover the pastimes that brought joy to her life.
Gardens for the soul
Among all her pastimes, gardening held a special place. Christie took great pleasure in getting her hands dirty with soil and watching her plants grow. At Greenway, her holiday home in Devon, she spent hours observing the changing light on the rhododendrons, designing green corners and tending to her greenhouse. She was not a professional gardener, but she found in nature a source of calm and creativity. She often experimented with exotic plants brought back from her travels, making her garden a reflection of her adventures. For her, nothing compared to the peace of watching a well-tended garden bloom.
The charm of houses
Agatha had another great passion: her houses. From her childhood home in Ashfield, Torquay, to her final retreat in Winterbrook, she delighted in redecorating, moving furniture around, and creating welcoming spaces. Another of Christie’s great hobbies was archaeology. When she married Max Mallowan, a distinguished archaeologist, she did not simply accompany him on his expeditions to Iraq and Syria. On the contrary, she became an active member of the excavation teams. She cleaned pottery fragments, took photographs, recorded finds and even used her face cream to restore delicate objects. In Come, Tell Me How You Live, her delightful memoir of archaeological life, she recounts with humour and freshness the reality of life on digs: from the discomfort of tents to the thrill of unearthing fragments of the past. For her, archaeology was work, adventure and fun all at once.
Travelling, always travelling
If there was one thing that defined Agatha Christie, it was her love of travel. From an early age she explored the world: first with her mother, then on the famous 1922 Grand Tour with her first husband, and later on countless journeys to the Middle East with Max. She travelled on legendary trains such as the Orient Express, crossed deserts and sailed down the Nile. Travel was, for her, much more than mere movement – it was a vital experience that broadened her horizons and gave her memories she treasured just as dearly as the objects she brought back home.

Christie valued contact with the earth, the beauty of a well-kept home, the thrill of archaeological discovery, the adventure of travel, the freedom of gliding over the waves and the intimacy of music. All these pastimes together create a portrait of the writer that is closer and more human, far from the myth and full of vitality.
Perhaps that is why her readers feel that behind every novel there is more than just mystery. There is a woman who knew how to enjoy life in all its facets. And, as she herself confessed, happiness was found in simple things: a garden in bloom, a light-filled house, and an insatiable curiosity to explore the world.
